How Many Letter Tiles Does Scrabble Have?
The game of Scrabble is not the typical board game. While it does come with a physical board, like most of them do, instead of playing with dice or little figures to represent your characters, you play with lettered tiles. Given that Scrabble is a word game, it makes sense you would play with lettered tiles rather than the game pieces that come with Monopoly for example.
In this article, we will go through everything there is to know about Scrabble and their tiles!
100 Tiles
In Scrabble, there are 100 titles that are available to the players. There are two blank titles which you use like a wild card. Say you want to spell the word “Cloud” and so far, you have only managed to spell out the first four letters of the word.
If you find yourself in possession of a blank title rather than the letter “D,” you can use that instead of using the letter “D” tile. Be aware that once it is used, that’s it. It has to stay on the board until the game is over and will remain the letter you substituted for.
Besides the two blank tiles, there are 98 letter tiles that contain some letters of the English alphabet. Some letters may have more than two or three tiles while others could have only one.
In the end, you can make words with any of 100 tiles that are available to you. Do try to keep an eye out for the blank tiles. If you end up with one, consider saving it for a letter that has only one tile represented in the game.
The Most and the Least Amount of Tiles
The tiles that have some of the most tiles in the game are the vowels. For the vowels, there are the following number of tiles for each letter:
· A has 9.
· E has 12.
· I have 9.
· O has 8 tiles.
· U has 4 tiles.
However, there a few letters outside of the vowels that have a decent number of tiles. These include:
· N has 6 tiles.
· T has 6 tiles
· D has 4 tiles.
· L has 4 tiles.
· S has 4 tiles.
So, as you can see it’s more than the vowels that have more than two tiles.
While there are letters that have multiple tiles, there are also letters that only have one representing it. Some of those with one tile include:
· J has 1 tile.
· K has 1 tile.
· Q has 1 tile.
· X has 1 tile.
· Z has 1 tile.
Any of the letters we did not list here have mostly 2 tiles representing them. The only letter that has 3 tiles representing it is the letter G. Knowing the number of tiles available might seem trivial, but it can really help your overall strategy when you are playing the game.
Tile Values
For the value of the tiles in Scrabble, it really does depend on what letter we are talking about. Points range from 10 per letter to 1 per letter. It really does just depend on what letter and/or letters you are using to spell out your letter onto the Scrabble Board.
Here is a brief breakdown of some tiles and their scores in Scrabble. They are:
· Q and Z are 10 points each.
· J and X are worth 8 points.
· K is worth 5 points and interestingly enough, it’s the only one worth 5 points!
· D and G are worth 2 points.
All the other letters not managed are worth either 1, 3, or 4 points. It really just depends on the letter you are playing. It seems the rare the letter, the more it is worth! The more common it is, the less it’s worth.
Not that you can’t play lower scoring tiles and smaller words. If you can’t see any options that will get you a bigger score, then go with the two or three lettered words! It is better than nothing!
Letter Distribution and Language
We all know that Scrabble is an extremely popular game in the United States, but did you know it’s also extremely popular in other countries as well? Given that this is the case, it should be no surprise to learn that this game has been published In many languages other than language. If it’s a common language, chances are there is a version of Scrabble in it!
In the English version there are 100 total tiles, but other languages may use a different amount. We have a few examples so you can get an idea of how it differs depending on the country. This is how it looks in the following countries:
· Afrikaans, Icelandic, Greek language editions have 104 tiles
· Italian and Portuguese language versions have 120 tiles.
· Welsh language version has 105 tiles.
This is just a small version of the list. Admittedly, many languages use 100 tiles, but there are few (like our examples above). Some have more than that. It really does depend on what language version of Scrabble you are playing.
If you do speak a language along with English, consider playing their language version of Scrabble. We’ll see if you can beat an opponent in not only inhibit two languages!
